These far reaching portable satellite phones of today, are however, a far cry from their humble beginnings. When the telecommunications industry emerged from Bell's laboratory, just over a century ago, no one could have predicted where it would lead. The days when telephones hung on the wall and you had to dial or crank it if you wanted to connect with someone. The days of party lines, busy signals and operator switchboards. Old phones are central to the history of the twentieth century. Maybe that is why so many people find them fascinating.
